Mariah Peixoto (1994), São Paulo - Brazil.
Since my teenage years, I am deeply interested in visual arts and curious about how we communicate through symbols. Therefore, when I decided to rethink my career paths, back in 2016, I started to take some photography courses, aiming to learn more about images and to reconnect myself with what captivates me.
In my daily life, I am constantly trying to be pragmatic and logical. However, my art tends to be quite the opposite. As a way of provoking and questioning realities, my creations are heavily surreal and/or psychedelic, resulting in images in which the limits and layers are unclear. My goal, so, is not to “freeze time”, but to create something unseen and reimagine possibilities.
Due to my will to experiment and go beyond what we see through the regular lenses, I ended up falling in love with analog photography. When my father gave me his dear Pentax MESuper, I got instigated to understand what film could offer me that my digital equipment couldn't. After shooting my second roll, therefore, I decided to play with the chemicals before developing it, making my first film soup recipe. The results were, for me, extremely mind-blowing, and I immediately wanted to experiment more with film and its possibilities.
My passion became even more intense when I learned how to make my first double exposures. After that, I decided that my relationship with film was going to get serious, and I ended up buying a Nikon F100 to have more control over this technique. (Most of the images you will see in this website were created with this cyborg baby, by the way!)
Although I rarely work as a photographer— and, unfortunately, it has been harder and harder to keep myself regularly shooting (both due to film prices and time) — I am constantly trying to keep my creativity flowing. And, since I definitely feel the urge to hang out with my gear from time to time, I have been making it work at my own pace.
In the past couple of years, I took part in some art exhibitions, was published in international and national magazines, gave interviews about my work/projects and had my images decorating album covers. You can check my art curriculum below:
