About

Since I was a kid, I was deeply concerned about environmental issues and afraid of the paths our society was and, unfortunately, is still taking. After having a hard time choosing which degree I wanted to pursue, I ended up studying Biological Sciences at University of São Paulo in 2014, aiming to work with something related to sustainability. However, things did not go exactly as I planned and, after two years struggling with all the lab routines, I decided to quit and start a new degree within Human Sciences.

In 2015, I became a vegetarian due to environmental concerns and, in 2017, I started a new degree in Public Policies & Management, again at University of São Paulo. Considering that I wanted to work on projects that aim to change and improve our realities, I decided to go for a more practical bachelor degree, and Public Policies & Management seemed to be a good match!

Since the first week of my new studies, I got in touch with the D.I.A.N. Group, a research and science outreach initiative that aims to discuss animal rights and environmental issues from a critical perspective, developing activities that involve the community around the campus. (You can read more about this project at our official website.) I started as a volunteer and quickly fell in love with the group and its discussions, rapidly becoming deeply involved with all the activities. And, after getting in touch with the animal rights theories during our weekly studies, I ended up becoming a vegan in late 2017.

In 2018, I officially started my Scientific Initiation project within the group, funded by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) and advised by Prof. Dr. Luis Paulo Piassi. During this project, I was working with kids from a low-income community and developing activities under the Critical Animal Pedagogy perspective. Soon, I started to join academic conferences and got more and more involved with the academia. Below, you can see a picture of me presenting a paper during a conference in João Pessoa – Brazil (2018), and another one of me working with the kids during the execution of my project, dressed as a Brazilian jaguar.

In mid-2018, I became one of the D.I.A.N.'s team coordinators, dedicating most of my time to activities developed within the group. And, after finishing the first year of my Scientific Initiation, I applied for another year of funding, being again approved by FAPESP and now aiming to work with teenagers from the same community.

Before starting the new part of my research project, however, I was awarded with a scholarship for a three months research internship at the University of Ottawa, funded by Mitacs Globalink Program. And, while in Canada, in 2019, I worked directly with Prof. Dr. Giuliano Reis and Prof. Dr. Richard Maclure, investigating how the Canadian youth was engaging in proposing solutions and seeking to solve socio-ecological issues.

Back in Brazil, I was again dedicating myself to my research and coordination duties. And, within my research project, I decided to apply for another internship, this time funded by FAPESP (BEPE scholarship). I wrote a proposal co-advised by Prof. Dr. Helena Pedersen (University of Gothenburg, Sweden), a reference in the Critical Animal Studies and Critical Animal Pedagogies fields, and four months project was approved. In 2020, therefore, I went to study/work at University of Gothenburg — where I ended up staying for five months due to the global pandemic. While in Sweden, I studied critical theories that approach the power relations between humans and animals, focusing on: Critical Animal Studies, Critical Animal Pedagogy, Post-Humanism and Visual Education.

After coming back, I continued working as a team coordinator at the D.I.A.N. Group, and decided to develop my bachelor's thesis within it. As mentioned, I had been working with kids and teenagers from the community near the campus during my previous research projects; however, my results showed me that, if I wanted my work to be more effective, I also needed to work with these kids' teachers. With that in mind, I developed my bachelor's thesis aiming to reach this new public, and ended up writing the first version of what later became my first book publication.

With this 'draft', I graduated in mid-2022 and, since then, I have been working on my book, "Reflexões Animais: Por Uma Pedagogia Para Além do Humano" (2023), that soon will be available in English. You can read more about it here!

For now, I am working on spreading the content of my publication worldwide, discussing why and how we could/should approach our relationship with other animals within the classrooms. And, in a couple of years, I plan on applying for a Master program.

Overall, I believe it is possible to create a way better and less oppressive future. And I am willing to work hard for trying to achieve it, always aiming to build connections that will amplify our voices!
